Discover the secret military past of the Vis island

Vis Island holds many historic secrets: fortresses, military subways, and labyrinths of tunnels. The island was strategically significant in the Adriatic and was fought over in many naval battles. From the ancient time of Diomedes, Platon and Issa to Vis marked by English presence on the Adriatic sea, from the times of Francis Josephs’s empire to becoming the base of commands of Tito and resistance partisans.
But, some of the most attractive sites to see are the military tunnels dug throughout the island after the end of Second world War in 1945 when the island was a major military base for Yugoslav army. There are over 30 different military objects scattered across the island: one of the most attractive is the missile base at Stupišće point near Komiža. It was a huge base for land-sea missiles with impressive tunnel and bunker complex to be on alert in case of invasion.


After the war, Vis became a military base with strictly controlled access, so the beauty of the island has remained relatively intact. It was only in summer 1989 that the island opened to foreign visitors. This military tour will take you on an adventure with Land Rover jeeps to see some of the many abandoned military sites on Vis and enjoy the amazing panoramic view.
The Itinerary:
Departure is possible either from Komiža town or Vis town. After a short drive, we will reach cape Stupišće where a former cannon and rocket base is located. We will pass through the labyrinth of underground tunnels, see the remains of cannons and abandoned warehouses. After a tour of the rocket base Stupišće, we will continue driving to the next military tunnel ARK Vela Glava.


A tour of the tunnel will follow and after we will ascend the highest point of the island of Vis – Hum peak (587 m). We will enjoy the view of the surrounding archipelago and town of Komiža and visit the small church of St. Spirit. On the way back, we will take a short walking tour of the well-known Tito’s cave.
